Dengue Fever

Dengue Season in Delhi and nearby areas continues every year from August till mid-November.

Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquito, which likes to bite during the day. To keep safe, it’s best wear full-sleeve clothes, and full-length pants during the whole day.

It’s important to use mosquito repellent creams, sprays, or patches while going out, and keep reapplying them every 6-8 hours. Mosquito repellant electrical devices and agarbattis can also be used in the house. Doors and windows should be closed at all times during the day.

Babies should be under a mosquito net while sleeping.

To prevent breeding of mosquitoes during Dengue Season, we can all do our part.

Water bowls kept for birds should be cleaned and refilled every day. Water coolers should be cleaned every 5-7 days.

Roofs should be checked regularly for water-logging or for trash that allows water to collect.

We can talk to our RWA or municipal bodies to get our neighbourhood fumigated regularly.

Typically Dengue causes high grade fever, pain behind eyes, severe bodyaches, throat pain, and rashes. But not everyone gets all symptoms, and some people may get only low grade fever.
It is advisable to visit a doctor if there is high grade fever, or if fever lasts longer than 3 days, or if there are any of typical symptoms like rash or pain behind eyes.

It’s essential to visit a doctor or hospital immediately if there’s breathing difficulty, bleeding from anywhere, or severe vomiting.

During Dengue Season, if we get any kind of fever, it’s best to avoid painkillers such as ibuprofen (Brufen or Combiflam), nimesulide (Nimulid, Sumo), diclofenac (Voveran), and aspirin (Disprin). These medicines can lower platelet counts, and interfere with the function of platelets.

Paracetamol is safe to take in limit. Ask your doctor what’s the safe limit to take in 24 hours for you and your children.

Sponging with room temperature water can help if high grade fever is not getting better with paracetamol.

It is very important to take rest and drink lots of fluids during the whole day, including coconut water, lemonade, soup, lassi, buttermilk, juices etc.
